Review the question below  to see if someone else has asked your question, and if not, Ask the Gardener!  Question:     Ask the Gardener Forum    Q.    A.     --  Q.  After Poppys have flowered, do you cut off the stem, and do they flower only once a year? I live in Northern Minnesota.   A.  Yes, once poppies have flowered you do want to cut off the flower stem. Some varieties flower only once a year while other varieties flower all summer long. Check with your favorite nursery/garden center for more information on the different varieties of poppies.     Q.  Do you cut back the foliage of irises and day lilies, if so how far back and when do you cut them ?   A.  Yes, the foliage of iris and daylilies do get cut back. It is done in the late fall and cut back to approximately 2-3. In the meantime, however, you can cut back the spent blooms on the plants. Just wait until the end of the season to cut the foliage down.     Q.  My burning bushes leaves seem to be curling, any suggestions?   A.  Curling leaves generally indicate some type of insect activity. I would recommend taking a leaf off and pulling it open and looking for insects. Depending on what you fine, the plant may need to be sprayed.     Q.  Do iriss need to be deadheaded after the flowers are spent?   A.  Yes, it is best for the health of the plant if you deadhead after the flowers are spent.     Q.  We live in Northern New Jersey and planted about 15 Arborvitae along our fence on the west side of the house late last summer. It is now mid March and they are turning brown. Im assuming its winter damage due to cold, ice and wind. I need to know what to do about it. One looks really bad. Do I cut off the brown parts or just leave it alone. You may also choose some plants from the butterfly garden reference sheet as they are also good for birds. Dogwoods (Trees or Shrubs) Dogwoods come in may colors and many shapes. You can choose from shrub or tree and then choose a color. There is also a fairly new evergreen which was recently introduced for the warmer zones that will flower in the spring and stay green all year long. Ornamental Grasses The options here are many and it will all come down to what you like for color and size. Please check out this excellent, simple but informative reference on the web from Colorado State. Weigela This rapidly growing deciduous shrub flowers in June on previous years growth. Weigela produces clusters of wide-lipped tubular flowers in pink or red. Its leaves are about 4 long and can be mid to dark green or even variegated depending on the variety. It will grow in most any soil but prefers dry conditions. Campsis Radicans I f the name sounds unfamiliar to you, try Trumpet Vine or Trumpet Creeper. This fast growing vine is excellent for a trellis. It can be invasive so be careful. One thing to keep an eye on ... this is a personal favorite of hummingbirds. Viburnum This attractive deciduous shrub flowers in early summer with fragrant white blooms in clusters on the ends of long stalks. Its green glossy leaves turn rich red in the fall. ht t p://www.Churchi l l Gardens .com  ");
