Korean Barberry Berberis Koreana

A species not found too often in American gardens. Tends to be very aggressive and sometimes offensive. An upright-branched shrub that requires some thinning on occasion. Medium to dark green leaves turns beautiful shades of yellow, orange and reddish purple in fall. Produces bright yellow flowers in May. Through the fall and winter exhibits egg-shaped reddish fruit 1/4" - 3/8" long. Very easy to grow but does not tolerate wet soil. Tends to sucker.

Decidous shrub with gray-green foliage. In mid-summer through fall (depending on variety) the butterfly bush arching canes produce long narrow cones of densely packed flowers. Butterflies cannot stay away from the nectar in these beautiful flowers. Prune in late winter to encourage strong canes and larger flowers. You will find purple, red and white butterfly bushes at the garden center.

Offering beautiful yellow-orange and red fruit in October. Beautiful dried for fall arrangements. A vigorous twining vine. Has 2" - 4" long dark green leaves that turn greenish yellow in fall. Yellowish white flowers open in May and June at the end of the branches. Need both male and female plant for good fruit production. Very adaptable to a wide range of soils and pH even tolerating dry conditions.

Hydrangea is the queen of late flowering shrubs. These plants produce large flower heads in August and September when most other shrubs have finished flowering. Most popular are mopheads but, there are also Lacecaps. Lace caps blossoms have a small cluster in the center with flowers that extend out. Hydranges can be very demanding plants and require good soil, plenty of water during dry spells in summer and regular feeding. They can not handle full sun or strong winds and may require protection in the winter. If you are successful in getting your Hydrangea to bloom you will be greatly reward for your efforts.

Andromeda is an evergreen shrub that produces lovely springtime flowers. Foliage in spring is in shades of pink and reddish bronze and deepens to glossy green in summer. Flower color will depend on variety but are commonly found in a creamy white and a vibrant pink. Andromeda is a woodland plant similar to mountain laurel and rhododendrons. Plant where shrub will receive only partial sun and in average soil amended with peat moss. This shrub should be planted in an area where it is not crowded and it's beauty can be enjoyed. Dull corners and shaded paths make a great home for this plant.

Andromeda Rhododendron P.J.M.

Grows 3-6 ft. tall and wide

Unlike other broad leaf Rhododendrons, the P.J.M. can tolerate full sun unusually well. It produces lavender-pink flowers in the early spring and its foliage turns a mahogany or bronze in winter. Like all azealas and rhododendrons P.J.M.'s should be planted in moist well drained acidic soil. If they are in full sun it is important to keep the soil moist and to maintain a mulch 2 or 3 inches deep to keep roots moist. May be planted in masses, as hedges or as screens.
