Difficult to find at Garden Centers usually has to be transplanted from the wild. Pyramidal to oval-rounded in outline with dark green 2"-5.5" long leaves. Leaves turn yellowish to reddish purple in fall and the bark is gray-black. Fragrant, white flowers in May and June. Produces 1"-1.5" yellowish red to pale orange edible berries in the fall.
